There’s no denying that U2 has become one of the most iconic, loved and, yes, important rock bands in the world. And if they’re not bigger than Jesus, Bono’s attempt to turn his celebrity toward the greater good — rubbing elbows with heads of state as he tackles climate change and African debt relief — hasn’t hurt his saintly stature. With an unchanging lineup of Bono (vocals), the Edge (guitar), Adam Clayton (bass) and Larry Mullen, Jr. (drums), the Dublin-born band established itself with a string of post-punk-influenced, protest-minded albums in the early ’80s. The Joshua Tree (1987) and the following year’s Rattle & Hum capped the first phase of the band’s career. The ’90s were U2’s pop decade, as they at once embraced and undercut their mega-star status, experimenting with dance beats and multimedia theatrics. Beginning with 2000’s All That You Can’t Leave Behind, U2 returned to their rock roots and embarked upon a “mature” career phase that included record-setting tour grosses and induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. No Line on the Horizon — released in March 2009, 30 years after their debut EP — suggested that the band had no intention of slowing down.

Have you ever been listening to Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” and thought, “You know what would sound really freaking awesome? This song, performed in multi-part choreography by a high school glee club”? Well, friend, 2009 was your lucky year, then. Fox premiered Glee, its musical-comedy about a high school glee club full of underdogs and misfits with fabulous voices and their plucky Spanish teacher leader (played by musical theater actor Matthew Morrison). Then, the network quickly began an unconventional marketing campaign: they started releasing the cast’s “Glee-ful” pop covers as singles — and it worked. One after another, the slick, show choir versions of “Don’t Stop Believin,’” Kanye West’s “Gold Digger,” Rihanna’s “Take a Bow,” Heart’s “Alone” and Queen’s “Somebody to Love” made their way onto the pop charts. While the camptastic aesthetic is certainly part of the appeal, most of the credit goes to the talented cast, which includes musical theater vet Lea Michele as an uber-ambitious social pariah/would-be star with killer pipes, Cory Monteith as the sweet but clueless popular jock/Journey fan and the inimitable Jane Lynch as a Machiavellian cheerleading coach.

It’s impossible to calculate Timbaland’s impact on urban music. Beginning in the mid-’90s, the Virginia producer not only revolutionized how hip-hop and R&B sounded, he also changed how pop audiences view the role of the producer. His work for Missy Elliott and Aaliyah elevated those figures into the spotlight, and introduced a singular production aesthetic that incorporated tabla rhythms and electro flourishes. The sound was witty and eclectic, and the five albums he created with Missy Elliott — from 1997’s Supa Dupa Fly to 2003’s This is Not a Test — are among Southern hip-hop’s most treasured. They were immediate and visceral, alternately giant and quirky, building bombast out of world music nuances. You can hear Timbaland’s influence in nearly every Southern and Midwestern producer, and his sound has been adopted by pop acts ranging from Justin Timberlake to Nelly Furtado. He is among the most respected figures in hip-hop, and in many ways is comparable to legendary pop producers such as Phil Spector.

George Strait is less an elder statesman of country than a pure force of nature. The Texas-born traditionalist continues to enjoy an unbelievable run of success that spans two decades of country music. Strait grew up on a ranch, so his cowboy hat is no affectation. He gravitated to music early on, playing rock in high school and switching to country during a stint in the military. He and his band Ace in the Hole played honky tonks and dancehalls throughout Texas in the 1970s, releasing two independent albums and honing a sound that combined lean Honky-Tonk and hard-hitting Western Swing. Strait scored a major Nashville deal in the early ’80s and immediately appeared on the country charts. Amazingly, he has stayed at the top of the charts through the turn of the century, with shelves of gold and platinum records to his credit. Although he records some of his own material, he has relied on top-notch songwriters such as Sonny Throckmorton and Jim Lauderdale throughout his career. Strait has done what few artists have: he’s remained wildly successful through a number of sweeping changes that have beset country music, playing primarily in a traditional style.
